Adverse Weather Guidelines
Please find below the Ullapool High School Guidelines for parents with children travelling to school in adverse weather. I also attach the Highland Council guidelines for your information.
If there is an issue with the school transports or, indeed, with the school itself, there are three main methods of contact :
- The 0800 564 2272 telephone line (parents' pin number 04 1250) which will always be updated first. Parents are encouraged to use this to check for weather and transport information. It is updated as soon as school staff receive news from outlying buses, etc. or if there are any issues which will affect the opening of the school. If the information on this phone line has not been updated (recorded messages include the date and time they were made), then we have no new information to impart and the school or buses are all open, operating as normal or still attempting to pick up pupils and make their way here.

- Parents of pupils can phone the school after 8:15am if they have any access concerns.
Hopefully, by using these 3 methods, parents will be kept aware of any issues which have arisen.
It is very unusual for the school building to be closed to all pupils given that, for those who live in the village, we are within walking distance of the majority (the Highland Council guideline is 3 miles). If there are enough staff present and all the main utilities are working – electricity and heating being most important - then school will be open and classes run as normal. If, in extreme circumstances, the school does close, the 0800 phone line will be updated first, followed by the school’s twitter account and finally the Highland Council website https://www.highland.gov.uk/schoolclosures.
Free School Meals and Clothing Grant
Highland Council and UHS are keen to ensure that all parents know how to apply for free school meals and also about the grants available to help purchase suitable school clothing. Further details and the online application form can be accessed using the link below. However, if youwould prefer, the School Office holds hard copies of these forms and can also process the proof of income required which can speed up the application.
Gone are the days of daily issued FSM tickets or any other method of publicly identifying those pupils who qualify for help. As we operate a cashles canteen here at the High School, all pupils use their NEC cards or a PIN number to access and pay for their canteen food and those who receive free school meals use exactly the same system, thereby ensuring that they are not marked out as different in any way.

EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance)
All eligible young people are being encouraged to apply for a weekly, term time allowance of £30 per week from August 2021.
This weekly term time allowance is paid directly into the young person's bank account and does not affect the child benefit or other benefits being paid to their parents or carers. Applications are now being accepted for the 2021/22 academic year from Highgland school pupils in post-16 education.
