Maths
In the Mathematics department, we are keen that all pupils enjoy the highest possible achievement in the subject. We have ambition for all our pupils whatever their starting point. We aim to ensure good quality examination outcomes leading to the greatest possible choice for future careers and further study.
The skills and habits developed through Mathematics study will help all pupils become successful lifelong learners. In the community in general, a fluency with number and reasoning will bring a productive confidence that is invaluable.
Broad General Education
Mathematics engages learners of all ages, interests and abilities. Learning mathematics develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to think in abstract ways. It uses a universal language of numbers and symbols, which allows us to communicate ideas in a concise, unambiguous and rigorous way.
The broad general education Mathematics experiences and outcomes cover five areas:
Number systems, patterns and relationships
Measurement and its application
Shape, position and movement
Information handling
Problem solving

Senior Phase
In S4 all pupils will be given the opportunity to study at National 5 level. Most pupils will sit the National 5 examination at the end of S4. Some pupils will sit the National 4 examination instead.
In S5/6 pupils can choose one of two National 5 courses: Maths or Applications of Maths. Pupils with a good pass at National 5 have the opportunity to study Higher Maths.
In S6 pupils with a good pass at Higher can take the Advanced Higher Maths course.

Course Pathways
Resources and Revision
There are certain pieces of equipment that you must bring to Maths lessons every period. Please bring your pencil case containing a few pens, pencils, a ruler, rubber, and a scientific calculator. We recommend the Casio FX-83.
Some topics will require special equipment such as a pair of compasses and a protractor. Your teacher will let you know in advance when you will need these.

Parents/carers support the learning of their child by ensuring they complete Maths Monsters exercises at home four times a week. Each exercise takes approximately 5 minutes and supports ongoing progress in Numeracy. Links and reminders are posted on Google Classroom.
Senior Phase
Pupils are expected to review their learning and try a few more questions for practice as a routine at home after every Maths lesson. This embeds learning and gives an additional opportunity for pupils to check their understanding and seek help if required.
Additional compulsory homework is posted regularly to support revision of topics throughout the year.
