Art & Design
In Art & Design you can explore your own unique creativity in an atmosphere of encouragement and enthusiasm. We believe that learning skills such as drawing and painting, processes for making and experimenting with techniques gives young people options for expressing themselves visually; making YOUR mark in YOUR way is empowering and healthy! Engaging with Art and Design is for everybody and we aim for an inclusive approach, celebrating each and every pupil’s ability.
Broad General Education
At BGE level we aim to cover important skills, introduce a variety of techniques and processes, be inspired by artists and designers and learn to use reflection and evaluation in a positive way. Topics and projects can change, but this gives you some idea of what we cover:
S1: ‘Word Art’ design unit (graphics); Drawing Unit; Painting Food expressive unit(painting); ‘Insects’ design unit (stylisation techniques and 3D).
S2’ Sea and Shore’ expressive unit(ceramics and print); ‘Surf’s Up’design unit (graphics and digital); ‘Figure This’ expressive Unit (3D sculpture).
S3 : ‘Inspired By’(Still life unit); Portrait unit (drawing, print, ceramics); Community-linked Design unit (e.g Poster, mug , mural, postcards, jewellery).
Senior Phase
In the senior phase we offer pupils the chance to study Art & Design from National 4 to Advanced Higher level, as well as pupils having the option to workthrough the National Progression Award (NPA) in Photography at levels 4 and 5.

Resources and Revision
There are certain pieces of equipment which would be very useful for you to bring with you to Art and Design each lesson. These are:
A drawing pencil and a rubber!
Most topics will require specialist art materials which the Art Department will provide.
If you do have your own materials such as coloured pencils or pens, then you can of course bring these in too!
When you are higher up the school and studying for a certificate class we can lend out materials and equipment if necessary to help you complete work at home or in study time.

Homework
Generally, all BGE classes can expect a small homework task to be allocated every 2 weeks in S1/2 and every week at S3 level. Homework wil be completed in pupil sketchbooks or sometimes on Google Classroom.
As pupils move up the school and into certificate classes, Homework becomes more important in Art & Design , as practising and improving skills is the key to success. At senior level, pupils will be expected to do at least 1-2 hours of Homework each week.
The Art Room can be made available as a space to work in for pupils outside of class time ( e.g lunchtimes or after school), Just speak with a teacher to arrange!
For all stages, details of homework tasks are generally available on Google Classroom.
Beyond the Classroom
There are lots of ways you can get involved with Art and Design activities outside the classroom. Look out for activities and workshops being run by Highlife Highland or by Youth Services.
We sometimes run lunchtime Art Clubs at school – ask your Art Teacher.
An Talla Solais in Ullapool is the local Art Centre where activities often take place. Check their website!
