UHS D of E season round up ………..
We have had yet another very successful season for the Duke of Edinburgh Award here at Ullapool High School. September saw the Bronze qualifying expedition. They walked from Elphin to Achmelvich beach and the weather was stunning. Despite the forecast not sure what it was going to do it was lovely and sunny and not a breath of wind ……………… which was their downfall as midge nirvana saw all students in their tents by 8pm and a surprisingly brisk pace. Even with midge attack all weekend all 16 students completed with only a few minor blisters – well done!
Then October saw the Silver students undertake their qualifying expedition from Poolewe to Kinlochewe over 3 days. This lot were not so lucky with the weather with gale force winds and torrential rain, however the second night saw still and calm which again brought out the midges in force. They really did suffer all eventualities but all 10 students made it to the end – well done!
As the season come to a close for this lot we have achieved 16 Bronze awards and 10 Silver awards, another cracking year and with 38 S3 students signed up to do Bronze next year it is looking good for the future of D of E in the High School. It has been a great year with a lot of good stories of tears and laughter; however none of it could be done without the support of the staff, Instructors, parents and the community on the whole. Everyone has been so generous with their time and money this year and a massive thank you is owed to all.
These final photos sum up the year for me – we have had a fantastic time, and now we are exhausted! Here’s to next year.
